Runways might be the focus of Fashion Week, but some of the best style happens on the streets. In February, the directors of trends aren’t always the brands showcasing their latest collections; rather, it’s the show attendees, fashionistas, and celebrities who dictate what’s trending in the six months before the next Week begins.

The range in diversity of pieces —whether they’re current-season, archive, or vintage— in street style galleries provides the ultimate inspiration for getting dressed in the between-season. They’re best for sparking inspiration for trends that are more wearable: i.e. real people wearing real clothes. Take a page from the playbook of girl-next-door —or the next borough— while you wait for the next round of black-and-white NYFW banners to arise.

Heavy Metal

Chunky chains popped up everywhere this Fashion Week. There’s nothing as important to street style as making a statement, and thick bracelets and necklaces were the instant fix to creating a runway-ready outfit.

Texture

Embossed and embellished materials add eye-catching layers to a look that the fashion set was happy to utilize at Fashion Week. Reptile-embossed boots, coats and bags, seemingly a new take on the snake trend last season, were the most popular styles. Faux fur and feather trimmings added a lighter take on the trend, too.

Jumpsuits

One of fashion’s most versatile creations was a street-style hit this season. Case in point: showgoers and fashionistas dressing them up (and down) with every kind of bag, shoe, and coat imaginable.

Yellow

Maybe it was an antidote to the dreary weather, but every shade of yellow appeared in showgoers’ outfits this Fashion Week. The sunny, punchy color is the perfect tone to step into spring!

Bold Plaids

The popularity of colorful plaids is a fun trend that every fashionista and vintage-lover can appreciate. The most-worn style was a suit accessorized with a fun bag and boots, like Caroline’s suit on Day 5 of NYFW!

Belted Trenches

In keeping with the runways’ contemporary trends, a long, belted trench was the outerwear of choice at NYFW. No matter the color, this wardrobe essential made its mark on the street-style set.

Printed Boots

As the neutral-heavy aesthetic of the mid-aughts and sixties has come back, so has the printed boot. A statement-making piece spotted in reptile, tiger and zebra prints, this footwear trend is sure to add wild flair to any outfit.
