We are constantly told that we need more trendy clothes in order to be stylish.  But, style goes beyond the latest fast fashion pieces and, let’s be real, this way of shopping is not sustainable for the environment or our wallets.

You’ve probably noticed an influx in people talking about thrift/vintage shopping recently and it’s for good reason!  If you want to shop more sustainably while avoiding the high price-point of ethical fashion brands and new designer pieces, second-hand shopping is the way to go.

We’ve rounded up a few key pieces to have in your wardrobe that you’re better off buying second hand vs. new!

Shoulder Bags

Shoulder bags were popular in the ’90s and have made their way back to being relevant this past year.  Luxury designers have revamped this trend and now, naturally, they’ve trickled down to fast-fashion retailers.  We recommend checking out your local thrift stores and consignment shops to snag one of these bags because you’re likely to find one that no one else has!

Leather Jackets

A leather jacket is a staple in almost everyone's wardrobe.  It’s a timeless piece we always reach for when we don’t know what to wear.  Second-hand stores are full of leather/pleather jackets all with different hardware, lengths, pockets, etc.  Not to mention, new high-quality leather jackets will cost you a pretty penny!

Blazers

Whether it’s to the office or worn for street style, blazers are everywhere these days.  Along with the classic black-and-tan tweed, bold-colored blazers, to be specific, have been trending.  Adding a blazer to almost any outfit automatically elevates your look with a chic touch. We recommend buying vintage because you can score a great name brand blazer at a low price (and higher quality)!

Designer Pieces

New York City is full of consignment shops: What Goes Around Comes Around, The Real Real, A Second Chance, and Michael’s Consignment, to name a few.  The process of searching for a vintage designer piece can be more enjoyable than just picking out a new (and expensive) piece that you already know everything about — and a lot of people probably own.  If you’re looking to start or add to your designer collection, second-hand can be a much more realistic option financially.
