Whether you’re a WeWork hustler, coffee shop connoisseur, or prefer to work from the walls of your own apartment, there’s no denying that coworking spaces are taking over the city.
Take The Wing, with its fem-powered formula, and the all-new JA Studios in SoHo—the first shared studio space for beauty and wellness creatives. There’s even the mobile office subscription service, Croissant, that allows freelancers to reserve empty desks at more than 500 partner locations all over the world (think Classpass for coworking). Coworking spaces today offer not only a place to work but also a built-in network of like-minded individuals.
Kelsey Mulvey, a freelance writer and member of The Wing, says her membership has been one of the best investments of her career so far. “I live in a studio apartment on the Upper West Side and have to admit, working alone and living alone can be a little isolating,” she says. “Being at a coworking space keeps me focused on the tasks at hand and prevents me from spending all day in my pajamas. It’s completely free to work here and enjoy an atrium with an open seating area, an on-site restaurant and bar, and rotating art exhibitions. If you need more resources, you can rent a flexible desk for $350 per month. That includes unlimited coffee, VIP invites to A/D/O programming, and a client concierge.
JA Studios
If you’re a beauty or wellness professional, the brand new JA Studios offers a unique program founded by Fredrik Fekkai veteran Jennifer Albert. The WeWork of the beauty industry can enjoy a meticulously curated space with Insta-worthy shampoo bowls, beauty counters, and seating areas. WeWork may have started it all, and it continues to offer a lot of value with 50 locations across New York City. There are a lot of perks, from business-class printers to high-styled common areas and the renowned craft beer on draft. WeWork offers a ton of different office environments, from a shared desk to a corner office. Membership starts at $45 for twice a month or $190 for a daily desk space.
Freelancers Hub
If you’re on the fence over whether your hustle can afford to rent a desk at a coworking space, consider Freelancers Hub. Located in the Made in New York Media Center by IFP in DUMBO, the community space is completely free. Work here up to four times per month at no charge, and take advantage of classrooms, conference rooms, a 72-seat theater, media arts gallery, library, and cafe. The venue also hosts an array of free workshops and community events to strengthen your network.
